The High-Altitude Trek to Salida: A Journey of Challenges and Triumphs
I'm sitting here, reflecting on my recent adventure through the San Juans and the Collegiate Peaks, and I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment and awe. This journey has been a test of endurance, a journey of self-discovery, and a testament to the beauty of nature. From the San Juans to the Collegiate Peaks, I've faced challenges, made new friends, and experienced some of the most breathtaking views I've ever laid eyes on.
The San Juans: A Mountainous Odyssey
The San Juans were a formidable mountain range, with steep, continuous elevation gain. Each day, we climbed over 5,000 feet, a physically exhausting but rewarding experience. The defining feature of this stretch was the knife's edge traverse, a half-mile-long stretch of trail that featured a precipitous fall to the valley below. It was a test of courage and balance, and I'll never forget the feeling of watching Joker slide down the mountain, a moment that sent shivers down my spine.

The Collegiate Peaks: A Rigorous Hike
The Collegiate Peaks were a different kind of challenge. They were a rigorous hike, with a high concentration of 14ers. The views were spectacular, but the hiking was demanding. I struggled with elevation, feeling weak and feeble at times. I also experienced GI problems, which I believe were hypoxic in nature.
Despite the challenges, I was determined to push through. I took my first Colorado alternate, a 1.3-mile side quest to San Luis Peak, my first 14er. It was a thrilling experience, and I'll never forget the feeling of reaching the summit, watching the sunrise, and celebrating my literal new height.
The Collegiate Peaks were a test of endurance, but they were also a reminder of the beauty of nature and the importance of perseverance. I learned to embrace the challenges, to find strength in my own resilience, and to appreciate the sense of accomplishment that comes with each step.
A Homey Hostel and a Relaxing Zero Day
After a big day of hiking, I arrived at the highway and caught a ride down the road. I decided to take a zero at the Butterfly House, a homey hostel that reminded me of the hostels I stayed at on the Appalachian Trail. I cooked up a big batch of beef stroganoff, soaked my feet in the hot tub, and relaxed most of the day away.
The Butterfly House was a welcome respite, a place to recharge and reflect on my journey. It was a chance to connect with other hikers, to share stories and experiences, and to appreciate the sense of community that comes with being on the trail.
Looking Ahead: The Collegiate West
Tomorrow, I'll be heading north toward the Collegiate Peaks, Twin Lakes, and Leadville. This area includes the highest concentration of 14ers on trail, and I'm excited to take on the challenge. I know it will be a rigorous hike, but I'm ready for the adventure.
I'll be in the quadruple digits, having surpassed 1,000 miles on trail. It's a testament to the beauty of nature, the challenges of the trail, and the sense of accomplishment that comes with each step.
